SpaceShipOne Back on Course

Quote:
Prize contender Burt Rutan says his team has solved a control problem that threw its spacecraft off course during a historic flight last month and that the next time the ship flies it will be to capture the $10 million space jackpot.

"That's a complete, entire yes," Rutan said when asked whether his Scaled Composites team had gotten to the bottom of a trim-control problem experienced during SpaceShipOne's voyage to an altitude of 100 kilometers on June 21.

Now Boarding! SpaceShipOne Paves Way for Passengers?

Quote:
Just like the early days of aviation, Rutan said, there will be barnstorming-like flights as vehicles give passengers a brief sub-obital flight relatively soon. "The crazy $100,000 stuff," he added.

"But I don’t look at that as space tourism," Rutan said. A mature industry is one that has a passenger spending on the order of $30,000 to $50,000 dollars, with a second generation vehicle capable of lowering a seat price to around $10,000 or $12,000, he said.

When the price gets down to $1000, I'll start saving up my cash.

Don't hold your breath. You probably can't even get to Australia and back on that kind of money.

One of them was a two-stage winged vehicle with one as a carrier for the orbital vehicle. Both stages were piloted. Wonder if any of Rutan's designs were influenced by this concept.
There's also been some discussion on the Usenet newsgroup sci.space.history that the White Knight/SpaceShipOne combo may have been influenced by the Daimler-Benz Project B carrier plane/parasite jet bomber combo designed by the Germans in the late stages of World War II.
