Spiffy new HiRISE website design.

About our redesign:

Quote:
We’ve completely redesigned the HiRISE Web site to focus more on our images. As such, it’s a radical departure from our previous site, so we’ve put together this page to address some aspects of the redesign.

Ms. Emily at the Planetary Society comments:

An embarrassment of riches from HiRISE

Quote:
How many CDs would HiRISE's first data release fill? 1.7 Terabytes, divided by 700 Megabytes per CD, is 2,500 CDs.
That's already more image data than was returned in nine years by Mars Global Surveyor.

And MGS returned far more data than the previous Mars probes combined...

... first data... Is that from its beginning of the mission and until now, or what is meant by 'first data'?

Or in the parlance of this century it is about 34 of the new double density Bluray discs (or 7 of the 8 layered type just developed). That's starting to look like it will fit in the mailbox.

How is all this data going to get analysed?

Such analysis could take several years even with lots of scientists working on it. Maybe someone knows some more on this, it is not what i know most about, but i have heard that some old data get to the surface after several years after a mission is over. However, i don't know how detailed they will analyse all the data, because then you've got data for several generations

No doubt old Viking data is still being used. MGS produced vast amounts of data, but the problem was the lack of medium resolution coverage. There were problems locating the exact position of the MGS images. Now as that oversight is being corrected by Mars Odyssey and Mars Express, MGS images can be studied in full potential.

It was exactly Viking i thought about when i wrote the last post. The best if the american government decide to not give any money to the space industry is that we will have data for generations to analyse.

I'd like to see someone create a virtual Mars atlas, where you could click on a particular area and get all the images from that area from any mission. MSSS did that to an extent, but only for MGS and only by data release.

There are thousands of people around the world that has some interest in astronomy and would be happy to see such an atlas, but unfortunately i doubt there are enough people that has an interest in this for e.g. Google to make a Google Mars. But no doubt i would find it extremely cool.

How does Google Mars differ from the Google Mars you think Google would not provide?

It doesn't provide all mission images, sure, but neither does Google Earth.

In short, i didn't know it existed, though i recalled i had heard something about its existence but forgot everything about it But i don't find this one very interesting. First of it looks very stupid when you zoom out - that it is connected several times so it repeat itself. Furthermore, the detail level when zooming in is not so great - i don't know if this is as good as the satellites around Mars has provided us with, but i doubt it. I like the downloadable Google Earth better than this. Just when zooming it looks a lot better when you feel like flying down to the ground.

Just like Google Maps?

They aren't using every image they could, but I don't believe Mars has been imaged to the degree you desire. Newer orbiters are providing more detail, more every day, but it's more deep than broad. Were that detail there, random zooming would rarely happen to hit the detailed parts. If you happened to hit detail, a half-kilometer away you would likely see none. We don't have aerial recon of Mars like we do of Earth. It will probably be a long, long time before you can expect similar coverage. Patient?

Google Mars is basically the 100m Themis IR map and the MOC WA map. There are bits of Themis Vis @ 12m - but not much. MOC NA (a couple of hundred thousand images), HRSC (several thousand), CTX (1500 or so) and of course HiRISE imagery would be a major bonus - that would bring it up to a standard that mathces Google Earth where HiRISE coverage is (approx 1500 images of 5 x 10km )

Yeah. HiRISE images was what i was talking about. Put them all on Google Mars

Well 01101001, you should try downloading Google Earth, that was what i was talking about, not Google Maps. I don't know about you, but i like Google Earth better.
