I am not that sure how lizard skin looks, but i could imagine and partly agree that the terrain on the picture you provided me has some simularity with each other.

It could be that the white stuff is the natural color, and we see it there because this is the part of Phobos where its own gravity can't hold the dust onto the surface.

I assume the large indentation on the right side (by the white stuff) is the deflector dish.

It didn't do a very good job if it is!

New: CRISM Data Products

Quote:
Welcome to our Interactive Map
Explore Mars' distant past with this interactive map of high-resolution observations made by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
JHUAPL press release: New Online Map Reveals Evidence of the Forces that Once Shaped Mars

Quote:
A new online map lets visitors explore Mars’ past through a collection of high-resolution observations from one of the most powerful spectrometers ever sent to the Red Planet. Evidence of ancient bodies of water, flowing rivers and groundwater peeks out from beneath layers of hardened magma and dust—testaments to Mars’ progression through wet, volcanic and dry eras.

The data come from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), on board NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. CRISM’s primary mission is to search for signs that liquid water once existed on Mars by identifying minerals that form only in the presence of water. Molecules of water trapped in these minerals leave particular patterns in the sunlight that reflects off of them and into CRISM, which senses up to 544 “colors,” or wavelengths, of light.

A team of researchers at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), which built and operates the instrument, has converted the complex CRISM data into easy-to-understand composite images. “The images clearly show the distribution of certain minerals, which tells us about the planet’s history,” says Scott Murchie of APL, CRISM’s principal investigator. “This map moves the information out of the domain of specialists and makes the very latest Mars research accessible to anyone with an interest in the planet.” The online collection currently includes more than 900 observations, and more are being added as the team prepares them.

The high-resolution map can be found on the “CRISM Data Products: Viewing Features on Mars” Web site, at http://crism-map.jhuapl.edu/, and is best viewed with Firefox 2.0, Netscape 7.2, or Internet Explorer 7.0, or better.

Mars Mesas Stripped of Sand, Forming Dunes: Amazing Images from HiRISE

There seems to be a never-ending flow of stunning images coming from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on board NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). In today's high-resolution look at the Martian surface, large flat-topped hills (a.k.a. mesas) can be seen to be eroded by the Mars winds, stripping them of their material, creating sand dunes downwind. An incredible sight, it shows just how dynamic and powerful the Martian winds really are…

Universe Today story
The images are stunning.

This image has already appeared in one of the Phoenix topics, documenting a current event, but it's worth logging here in the MRO topic just because it's so awesome. Phoenix on parachute during landing:

Quote:
NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander can be seen parachuting down to Mars, in this image captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is the first time that a spacecraft has imaged the final descent of another spacecraft onto a planetary body.

From a distance of about 760 kilometers (472 miles) above the surface of the Red Planet, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter pointed its HiRISE obliquely toward Phoenix shortly after it opened its parachute while descending through the Martian atmosphere. The image reveals an apparent 10-meter-wide (30-foot-wide) parachute fully inflated. The bright pixels below the parachute show a dangling Phoenix. The image faintly detects the chords attaching the backshell and parachute. The surroundings look dark, but corresponds to the fully illuminated Martian surface, which is much darker than the parachute and backshell.

Yes, it is amazing! The fact that this picture even hasn't been improved and that you actually can see the chords is just amazing.

How about we change the name from Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to Mars Reconnaissance Office as a result of this fantastic image? (with a nod to the NRO)

You thought that is an awesome image? Well, they didn't provide the context.

Oh, and there is also a color picter of the probe sitting on the surface.

Guess we can't see the crater when the 360 degree panorama picture is ready. Agree?

Is it the solar panels that are blue on the picture on the second link?

The crater is at least 15 kilometers away, so I think that would put it over the horizon.

There's a bright blue spot that's the lander's body, then two dimmer blue spots on either side that are the solar panels.
