BTW, that's a BIG signature ya got there!
well there seemed to be some uncertainty as to what channel or where he was going to be on.

Is the signature better now?
I don't think he may have known which one, but why didn't you watch the 11:45 one? He will probably be on the 8:00 show, too. Apparently some people have seen him, and said he did well.

Yes, you're signature is much better--it was sort of overpowering your words. A bit hypnotizing. Thanks!

All,
Hold on there! Only us Brits are allowed to be ironic!
But this time the irony totally escapes me.
Have the BA and Dr.Cox (who has an uncanny resemblance to Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, the well known and flamboyant TV house decorater) had a previous falling out?
I'm not completely lazy, but Google can't find any meaningful link for me and a search here only finds a reference to his film making namesake.

Do tell!

John

OK

I videoed the first programme as I was out at work.

Using my digital camera, which only takes up to 80 seconds of avi footage, I videoed the TV playing back phil's interview. (Poor way of doing it I know, unless someone has a better way of doing this )

It took thre clips and I have cut them together and the wmv file is on this link it is 2.231MB

Enjoy
(Such as it is)

Edit - To amend link to the extended interview which aired on the eveing programme

Ditto that. Interesting to see you Phill at last.

It was an interesting program, if a little centered on the shoving comets out of the way over exactly what Deep impact would tell us but not bad all the same

Thanks for doing that Sticks! (yeah, really, nice location to be interviewed [insert envy face]). If people saw the pre-impact interview where the women reporter was interviewing Don Yeomans, she, too, was asking him a bunch of questions about catastrophic scenarios, and he mentioned the meteorites I referred to in the Astro-Quiz thread--the energy that would be released, etc, but it seemed like he wanted to dispel the notion that they aren't trying to figure out how to blow them up, because we might need to. I stay away from woo-woos, but isn't there this idea out there that the govt is hiding the truth about some comet out there?

Infinity, I think there's a bit of "give the public what they want"...the above reporter waited until the end, but she definitely pressed the issue. People like the "intrigue" aspect of it all. Wouldn't it be fair to say that the public, given the many polls, is bored by science unless they see it explode or do something wildly entertaining? The black and white pictures are not as exciting as the color pics..., but the people pay the bills.

Thanks, Sticks, that was cool! I was wondering how much they'd use. Not a lot, I see; we talked for about 20 minutes. Still, not too bad.

We filmed this on a hotel roof (overlooking a pool) in West Hollywood (the Windham Belage hotel). We could see Griffith Observatory behind us. The drinks were props... well, they were real, but we didn't drink them... well, not until after the shoot, at least. :-) It was cold, too, with a bit of a breeze.

My God, saw you on your show, BA.

It wasa surprise to me because I didn't know you were going to be on.

You're a Star!! BA! Well done, you sounded very astronomically knowledgeable.

And I liked your pink shirt.

I suppose that British geek was Brian Cox?

The only Brian Cox I know is an actor who once acted Hannibal Lecter.

I watched the interview on the second show and there was more of it, so now I need to re-do it if I can and put up the extended interview.

No promises though

Good programme, albeit fairly light. Once there's been time for the results to be studied, it deserves a Horizon programme. (So, in fact, do the Mars Rovers. Come on BBC, what are you playing at?)

Incidentally BA, have you ever had an invite to join Patrick Moore on The Sky At Night? He might be up for a special 'Bad Astronomy' edition, you never know...!

Reminds me when we were kids and taped radio programs by holding the mike of the cassette recorder near the radio's loudspeaker. :-)

I preferred the volume control tap. That way, you didn't have to be careful about making noise.

Enjoyment received. =D> I was wondering if I would ever get to see the BA for real (as in TV images in sync with his distinctive audio spectrum). I am still a little suspicious he is really real, however, considering the dubious quality of the images. Regardless, I am sold on the evidence which now dispells the potential rumor that the BA is a full Bot (a billion nanobots).

Thanks greatly, Sticks. Nice goin' BA (as usual)! =D>

[BTW, I did a spectral irradiance of his shirt and it's - rasberry, not pink  ]

Well, I think the BBC did a sensible job of showing the science, even if they did try to do the "sensational bit" with references to the film Deep Impact.

Phil, you are a star, sensible chat, no long words, and came across as passionate about your subject while maintaining a very down to earth approach ..... well that's how you came across to me, anyway....

Basically,..... WELL DONE! 8)

(..... although I'm still not sure about that shirt..... )

I think they did a fairly good job handling the whole question of Earth impacts, really. Nasa choosing such a name for the project means that you really can't ignore the issue completely, and at least the evening programme (I missed the morning edition) did a good job of explaining (a) there wasn't anything to worry about, and (b) what the science from the mission has already told us about the practicalities of deliberately altering the path of one should we need to do so.

It was great to see you on the telly, too!

Good prog, My girlfriend thought that the BA looked like a 'proper' scientist but Dr Cox was too young and trendy, thought he was just some kind of presenter. I pointed out he is a 'Dr' as well but she wasn't impressed, wanted to know where Sir Pat was.

Oh I agree with you totally, I'm not really complaining, just saying it would have been nice of the Beeb to give us a bit more on what exactly it would tell us, it was not a bad program at all I just felt it came up a bit more than necessary, still so long as it keeps the public interested in astronomy there is definitely a place for it.
