Okay, I want to emphasise that this is just for fun...

We've all heard about how the moon landings were allegedly faked and although I can understand perfectly well why they'd fake the first moon landing, no one has so far managed to explain why they'd then fake another five *and* also fake an aborted mission.

So, just for fun, imagine you're at a meeting at NASA... you've faked Apollo 11 but you need to come up with some good reasons to fake the rest.

What reasons do you give? :P

For the record I am a firm believer that we landed on the moon as described in the press.

1. The people who faked Apollo's 8 & 11 demanded to keep going as a cushy make-work project or else they'd collectively spill the beans to the world press [especially the Weekly World News].

2. Nixon saw it as a way to steal Kennedy's glory and make it his.

3. The war in Viet Nam was not going very well, and Monica Lewinski wasn't even born yet, so this was a good diversion.

4. They'd spent all that money on sound stages and special effects, and it seemed like a waste to just do one.

5. Apollo 13 was a script-writer's trick to make it all the more heroic, and unquestionable. Did you really think launching on April 13th at 13:13 Houston time was a coincidence?

LOL anton - I think your No.4 is especially plausible...

1) Nixon got too wrapped up in planning breakins and the like, and just forgot to tell NASA they only needed the one landing.

2) Star Trek was proving to be far more popular than NASA expected, so they tried to keep the moon thing going to compete.

3) On Apollo 13, they had a fire on the sound stage, and couldn't get it fixed on time for the astronauts to land. So they created a "problem" to explain why they couldn't land there.

oooo that last one is pretty good hey

Number 2 is my personal favourite.

How about... it was a front... to hide the fact that funds were being diverted into a secret government black project to breed a race of superhuman warriors by combining human dna with that of weasels and rabbits. The experiment went horriby wrong when the creatures showed a strong weakness for Southern Comfort and fast bikes. A small group broke out of the secret base and went into hiding in England where they formed a small colony which later gave rise to a second generation... hence the weaselbunny line B) .

(Sorry, I know Jack about politics so I've got to talk bollocks to make up for it!)

What actually happened was that the people paying for the moon landings didn't know they were fakes. The plan was to pretend to go to the moon, spend just a small part of the budget then pocket the rest.

Trouble was, the project overran so they spent nearly all the money anyway. So a second trip was planned. This time it made a small profit but there was so much attention on them, they had to keep going.

Finally someone hit on the idea of a failed mission to emphasize the danger, in the hope that someone would put a stop to the whole business or at least cut down the number of flights.

How about:

Nasa lost the moon and the money to fund the landings in a poker match with Russia so it seemed pointless to go there.

Native Moonites, who were acutally called flower children on earth, warned that they would take over the government if anyone attempted to land on their home planet.

The CIA needed the funds the moon landings were raise to spy on their favorite swedish stars.

Isaac Asimov wrote the book about the moon landings. NASA liked it so much they stole it and made it into a movie, but the movie was not as good as the book.

NASA needed a cover in order to continue to launch their rockets... which contained the components which they used for setting up their secret manned base on Mars... the base had no scientific merit, rather it was a holiday destination to be used as a perk for currying political favours, and which was out of the way from the prying public eye.

I think it was just a practical joke that got out of hand. NASA? How many countries have an arm of government set aside for the developement of space?

They couldn't stop laughing that the world actually beleive anyone went anywhere, let alone the moon, it was just so funny, it kept them entertained for a decade.

When the government found out, they forced NASA to build the shuttle so they found out what the meaning of real work was.

NASA actually launched the missions, but they missed the Moon and ended up landing on the planet of the apes.

To everyone interested in this topic I would recommend to read the article "Did NASA fake the Moon landing?" in the lattest issue of Astronomy magazine.

Maybe they faked it for the same reason that dogs lick their testicles... because they can!

LOL Weasel - so the next time someone asks you "were the moon landings faked" you can reasonably reply "b***ocks!" :P
