I was thinking it would be a cool way for NASA to get connected with the recent launch of SpaceShipOne by awarding Mike Melvill some kind of official astronaut status - that would show they have respect for this amazing accomplishment.
I talked to them on the phone today, and the astronaut wings are an internal award given only to NASA astronauts. And if they gave someone unconnected with NASA, then what about Dennis Tito, Mark Shuttleworth, Yang Liwei, etc. And then what about all the future space tourists? Can anyone think of a clever way that NASA could show it respects the SpaceShipOne accomplishment without cheapening the tradition of giving official astronaut wings to their astronauts?

I did notice that the FAA gave Mike his wings. That's even cooler. Abort this thread... case closed.
