I am one of those guys that does not like to wait around for NASA to decide to start a maned mission to Mars, so I am inventing ideas for interplanatery travle. (and i'm only in 9th grade!) I am currently trying to design spacecraft for travle to Mars. If any one has ideas, please tell me. I cant come up with them all!

Hi zobar!

You might check out this list of links at:

Cycler Orbiters

At first I didn't remember the name to this reference, and when I used Google for "Cycling Orbiter" and "Cyclic Orbiter" I turned up my own posts here at Universe Today Forum.

Anyway, this concept is a very interesting and promising design from Buzz Aldrin, a unique Astronaut.

A Nuclear Propulsion Would most likly be the best way to go ont that matter.
Hear is a site that tells the advantages.
You may want to build the space craft in orbit and go from there.

I did think about the orbitial construction. with the propultion, i was thinking of something along the lines of a miniture partical smasher. TONS of energy behind that! not sure about thrust though.

It will be interesting to see what kind of design you have if you don't know how much thrust it has. That will make it tough to figure out how long it will take to get anywhere and predict how much food and water the astronauts will need.

I was thinking about that. maby just use it for on board power.

zobar, You might check out this site-Advanced Propulsion Concepts

And, especially interesting is the subheading "Beamed" which includes a page on SOLAR THERMAL PROPULSION

Believe it or not, Solar can compete with Nuclear. B)

Why not combine a few propulsion techniques? Pick up some speed with chemical or nuclear propulsion and work from there with solarsails. The best thing is to create something that will give you a whole lot of speed, but you will have to deal with the g-forces. Maybe you can use them to your advantage through manipulating the form of the ship for artificial gravity.

cool idea. right now my design does not allow for rotation but then again this is just the beganig. maby you could sugest some ideas for design.

I've got an idea

How about a lunar gas station.
The moon has ice crystals at the poles. You can have a team on the moon harvasting this water and seperating it into hydrogen and oxygen. They are then loaded into a tank with the gases separated of corse. The tank is launked from the moon and will intersect your space craft. It will give it the fuel it needs to finish the journey.

And, what an excellent idea it is!!

Better hurry though. Some folks are setting their sights on Malapert Mountain, near the Lunar South Pole. You might want to Google it up.

97% sunshine throughout the year, constant view of Earth for communications; a nice dark, cold spot away from Earth on one side, perfect for Radiotelescopes...And best of all, Proximity to that ICE at the bottom of some deep craters.

Hi, Guys & Gals,

Nice to see the younger generation getting into Humankinds' most exciting adventure, exploring and settling the Red Planet..

Some of the questions you are discussing have been discussed in several publications, however if you haven't had a chance check out Dr Robert Zubrin's book "The Case for Mars" I suggest you do and use this as a primer for developing your thoughts.

There is a later publication called Expedition Mars by Martin J L Turner which expands on Dr Zubrin's writings and introduces new info as well.

Have fun,

What about a couple of Railguns, one on the moon one on mars?

I am sure they would work better in space than from Earth, and since you mob sound so enthusiastic and Tom2Mars (suprised to see you here Tom ) is on board, you might might beat NASA!

I am 31, for the record .

is there any signal coming from mars, so far the life is concern on mars?
on mars may be the life will start?
formations of rocks as seen in the photographs are nearly looking and matching with the earth stone layors. mars is a prospective star to search the life possibilities, because where ice is there life is shure!
we are eager for the mars daily news on television, why not live on television that what is going on mars and activities thereon?
M=most M=magical
A=arid A=amazing
R=region R=rovers
S=star S=style
we can draw many meanings of mars.
