Much too important for a mere goat. We need a volunteer.

Yeah, well the Mayans tried that one, and all they got was a nice calendar.

Historically, young girls weren't allowed to volunteer, they were taken.

We live in a more sane society now-a-days.

Historically, nobody as ugly as me would be chosen for a sacrifice.

I'm sure you're not ugly.

Too often girls get caught up in what magazines portray as attractive and forget that those people are airbrushed and made-up so much you wouldn't recognize them in real life.

Does not this talk of sacrifices smack of discussing religion?

Well, not goats necessarily. Any diary animal or domesticated species would do. And frogs. Never enough frogs.

But anyway, is there already a date (more precise than "two weeks after somewhere late october") communicated of when they will do their first attempt of breaking Spirit free? Or if any plan worked well on earth?

I don't know much about extracting Spirits, (Jim Beam and Father Karas do that enough) but the Great Galactic Ghoul assures me that the virgins he wants are not guys.

He does however want Spirit extracted from his best sand trap ever since his golfing buddy, "Shank-it McSeamus" broke his fav' club. Since I channel Big GGG, he assures me that he will take prayer requests for $19.99 a month (on lite FM) so send money now!

OH, I have another brain wave from him....Mmmmm...."Tell Tiger Woods not to hit the golf balls too hard, he keeps dinging the face on Mars to where its unrecognizable!"

That camera's still bolted to the empty lander

There's talk of using MARDI on MSL, AFTER it's landed as well

Cool! Perhaps Mars Express did set something of a precedent with its Mars Webcam re-use of a 'discarded' camera.

You know, that poor little Rover since the beginning of its mission has had the worst luck. It had a wheel that was locked-upped and which it had to drag around for such a long time, while at the same time having had to be driven by project scientists backward. It's original landing site, which seemed so promising at the time, turned out to be filled with nothing but volcanic rocks instead of the sedimentary rock that mission scientists wanted to study.

And yet, despite all of the adversity that this tough little machine has had to endure while on the surface of Mars, it has continued to defy the odds and keep on trucking. I think the little guy was very aptly named, because it most certainly has proven over the years that it has a lot of "spirit"! And that goes for the team who refused to give up on Spirit when they were offered the opportunity to switch to "Opportunity".

I would just like to take this moment to say....hats off to Spirit and the spirit of the project scientists who refused to give up on Spirit!

Eric

Yes, the names were applied randomly but turned out to be prophetic. Spirit needed to be spirited and Opportunity got a great opportunity.

So go on, Spirit, get unstuck and keep on inspiring us! We know you can.

Planetary Society Blog: She moves! "First drive sequence in 145 sols" for Spirit

Quote:
Before you get too excited about the motion, I should mention what rover driver Scott Maxwell said via Twitter yesterday, which was that this motion was just to steer the wheels into position for a future drive. Even so, it's a thrill to see Spirit doing anything like roving again.

Here's an absurd number of perspectives on the motion. [...]

Keep rollin', rollin', rollin',
Though the streams are swollen,
Keep them dogies rollin', rawhide.
Through rain and wind and weather,

Move 'em out, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em on.
Move 'em out, head 'em up:
Rawhide.

For a moment, I thought you were going to quote Fred Durst...

Go Spirit! I still want another 3000 sols roving around from you!

Up up up and down
turn turn turn around
round round roundabout

About that other rover...

Planetary Society Blog: Planetary Radio Q and A: Are meteorites on Mars actually interesting?

Quote:
It's true that it's far easier to study meteorites on Earth than on Mars. Opportunity examines the meteorites it finds on Mars not to learn more about meteorites, but to learn more about Mars.

The meteorites at Meridiani planum have, in all likelihood, been sitting there for a very long time. During that time, they have interacted chemically and geologically with the surface and near-surface atmosphere, so their current composition can tell us about chemical behavior on Mars.
More there.

This is the very best news on Spirit this year! I hope the controllers are able to put into effect the extraction of Spirit form the sand dune soon. It would be really great to see Spirit roaming Mars once again!
