Default Volunteers line up for simulated mission to Mars

Volunteers line up for simulated mission to Mars

Quote:
More than 70 people have volunteered to be confined in a mock mission to Mars – for 520 days. It would be the longest simulation of its kind.

The Institute of Medical and Biological Problems (IMBP) in Russia is undertaking the isolation study to learn more about the personal dynamics of long-duration space travel, according to Russian media reports. An actual round-trip mission to Mars could last about 30 months – about twice as long as this simulation.

Five people will be eventually be selected for the study. They will spend 250 days on a simulated space trip to Mars. Then, three of the five will leave the mock spaceship for a simulated "landing on Mars" that will last 30 days. The five participants will then embark on a 240-day journey "back to Earth". They will communicate with mission control by email.

Russia and the European Space Agency have done space isolation studies before. In these studies, researchers accurately reproduce the interior environment of a spaceship and the length of time crews would spend in space.

Only in Russia

I would have a problem with the name of the Institute "Medical and Biological Problems" has the word problem in it, but then again only in.......

Well I dont know what really is going to be learned buy this but.......

I did like this one,

And the outcomes have not always been pleasant. In an eight-month simulation carried out by the IMBP in 2000, a Russian man twice tried to kiss a Canadian female researcher after two other Russians had gotten into a bloody brawl. As a result, locks were subsequently installed between the Russian and international crews' compartments.

Closed life support systems for a realistic crew and habitat size.

Social dynamics of a small group in a realistic simulated Mars mission profile including landing and return.

Social dynamics between the isolated group, mission control and other groups they will interact with.

IBMP are world leaders in studying human spaceflight and this is a very interesting and important research project. Essential precursor research for real Mars missions and complemenatry to work in space.

Certainly not cause for you to beat your head against a wall.

Unfortunately, there need to be quite a few studies done with different types of personalities involved. While small-group dynamics isn't a really new study, I suspect the duration of isolation is more extreme than most have investigated. Presumably they'll involve testing similar to what's done to choose crews for long-duration submarine missions.

To my knowledge this is one of longest confinement studies ever done. It's also the first that has been linked to a simulated Mars mission profile. This has been at least 3 years in the planning, I first heard about it in 2003 from a lecturer from IBMP.

Could just be a translation issue.

Maybe I am dense but why should the name be a problem? It looks at bio-medical problems associated with spaceflight and other remote isolated environments (such submarines, polar bases, ships at sea) and aviation medicine generally.

I believe the IBMP also helpded develop the exercise regime that allows astronauts to stay in microgravity conditions almost indefinitely without any significant bone wastage.

As I said, they are world leaders in the field. IBMP believe that their current technology allows zero gravity missions of up to 5 years.

I am trying to lobby our country to have a space program so you can complain about it!
