Default Hirise photo orientation

All,
I've been enjoying the many pics from HiRise, but I'm puzzled why they are all shown as diagonal stripes across a vertical frame.

That's a symptom of the data being reprojected for a 'north is up' orientation. Depending on the location of the observation, the point of the spacecraft (up, down and across track ) and the orbital inclination - essentially what they do, with some cunning maths and trig - is take the data of the observation - 'reproject' it onto the surface, and then squeeze out the data in an orthographically proper way. The same is true of Themis, HRSC, and MOC images.

If you plough through all the entried on HiBlog - there's discussion of this process (I think )

The fact that it's 'multiple' stripes is the fact that HiRISE is actually 14 cameras - 10 in a row, side by side, for the red channel, and then the middle 2 are duplicated in both near IR and Blue/Green - so those 10 stripes are each reprojected to form the final image you see.
