Default NASA manned Mars mission details emerge

This was on Digg, isn't it posted here already?!

A 400,000kg (880,000lb) Marship would be assembled in orbit using the Ares V cargo launch vehicle for a 900-day mission to the red planet, according to details that have emerged about NASA's new Constellation programme's manned Mars mission.

As you haven't been Toseeked yet I'll mention that the slide shows from the conference can be found here.

The Drake one is pretty interesting, as is Sanders.

Interesting. I hope all goes well... I still think going to asteroids would be more useful in the short term.

Well, hopefully one of the outcomes of the VSE will be the ability to go to the asteroids and then we can get back on track.

I see that they have taken my suggestions of sending supplies ahead of time via unmanned robotic cargo vessel.

Now all they need to do is understand what a great savings in resources they would see by using pre-fitted cargo modules as the habitats. Such a scheme would allow them to send about 1 ½ times as many supplies, and two habitats, for the same cost as their present plans of one cargo ship and one habitat.

Robert Staehle proposed split mission archiectures in 1982. They have been a feature of almost every NASA study since 1987.

This has been discussed for decades, for example the Case For Mars proposal in 1986. It only works if the cargo is carried in pressurised structures. Much of the cargo need not be, so there are not always obvious advantages.
