Yes, the column on the right seems to be throwing a straight-edged shadow across the alcove. Maybe if we can get a pic of the formation at a time when the Sun's at another angle, we'll be able to see what's in the depression.

they say its from the frozen ocean. a metior lande and melted a shaft down the dark indentation. the melted water is more dense hence the indentation. water freezes from the top down so the indentation was frozen the surrounding ice is cracked. as the freezing progresses the remaining water is forced thru a crack to the surface. the bump is like the peak that forms on ice cubes.

Personally, doorway or not, I think the mesa itself is rather exciting, even if it is only a mesa. I can only imagine how breathtaking it would be to approach it from ground level...

I went through the Image I had clipped and computed the following sizes for the Mesa. The length/widths should be accurate based on the pixel resolution. The height is estimated based on length of angled face and length of angled shadows.

Est. Height (spire only) = 20.65 m (67.7 ft)
Est. Door like shadow Height = 12.39 m (40.6 ft)
Base Length at ground = 265.5 m (871 ft)
Base Width at ground = 177.59 m (582.6 ft)
Est. Base Height = 30m (98.4 ft)
