The Space Age arguably began in 1960. Some may quibble with the date but this is my list so I can be somewhat arbitrary. This is a list of the astronauts who have flown in space and who were born in or after 1960. Some interesting facts emerge from this list:

There are 24 astronauts born after 1960 who have flown. Of them two have died in space (8.33%),
Laurel Blair Salton Clark, Mission specialist, 41 and WILLIAM C. MCCOOL, pilot, Born September 23, 1961, STS-107 Columbia (January 16 to February 1, 2003). Died when Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew perished during entry.

The youngest at the time of his first flight was SCOTT E. PARAZYNSKI (M.D.) STS-66 Atlantis November 3, 1994. He was 33 at the time of his first flight and has flown four times. (Looks like med school is the way to go if you want to be an astronaut.)

All of the astronauts with the last name of Kelly have flown. Two were pilots one was a commander. Two of the Kellys were born on the same day (the Commander SCOTT J. KELLY STS-103, ISS Flight Engineer and one of the pilots of STS-108, MARK E. KELLY).

Additionally, the names SANDRA H. MAGNUS, MICHAEL J. MASSIMINO and RICK MASTRACCHIO occur consecutively in the NASA alphabetical listing of the active astronaut roster. http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/astrobio_activemgmt.html

Eight of the above astronauts were selected in 1996 as were the following six, DANIEL C. BURBANK, STEPHEN N. FRICK, CHARLES OWEN HOBAUGH, DANIEL M. TANI, REX J. WALHEIM and PEGGY A. WHITSON for a total of 14 selected in 1996. That is over half of all the astronauts who have flown, who were born after 1960, were selected in 1996.

Two of the astronauts who have flown have retired. All the rest of the former astronaut roster were born before 1960.

For those who want a statistical analysis challange; Draw a graph of the selection dates of all the astronauts and see if there is as sharp a spike as with the selecton dates of the astronauts born after 1960. Also draw a graph for retired astronauts and see if there is a spike of retirement in say 1995-96.
