BA Blog: BREAKING: Martian avalanche caught in the act!

Quote:
This picture shows the billowing dust cloud from an avalanche of ice and dust along scarps — sheer cliffs — near the north pole of Mars. To give you a sense of scale, the cloud is about 180 meters across, and about the same distance from the base of the cliff.

Who's up for hang gliding?

Seriously, that's cool.

I hope no Martian skiers were caught in the avalanche.
As others have said, way cool.

Are they sure it was an avalanche? Could it be a spill of CO2 gas that's dislodged dust?

My younger sister is going to love these photos.

She's 10, and already a huge Mars fanatic.

That also goes for the chocolate.

Thanks for the before and after pics. I was wondering if they had a before image of the site.

Default Earlier avalanche?

I think I found an earlier avalanche from the "before"-image taken Feb.3.

Maybe these happen frequently in the springtime?

Oh hi, fist post from a BA n00b but long time lurker.

Good eye. The Planetary Society Weblog, Before, during, and after avalanches on Mars, points that out with a blink-comparison animation of that part of the cliff.

It seems like that cliff must be pretty active.
