I think it's the only tool designed to do what it does. It's a lot of lost data if the problem cannot be worked around. Good thing they sound like there are workaround options.

Other items: the monkey foot print image was a scoop press and is called "Yeti" and test dig-and-dump should be attempted today. The rock/ice with dimples is "Snow Queen". No mention of the dimples. The several images were attempts at doing color by the Robot Arm Camera (RAC) but probably not successful (because it does color not with filters but with illumination, which should work in a dark trench but not under the lander).

Was the -30C maximum temperature taken in the air?
If so, ground temperature could be higher than that.
Does Phoenix have any ground temperature sensors?

A quick survey of technical papers on the Web seemed to speculate that Phoenix site air temperatures lag ground temperatures by a few degrees K to a bunch (um, maybe 20), and daily maximum air is less than maximum ground.

Edit: For instance, ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS EXPECTED AT THE PHOENIX LANDING SEASON AND LOCATION:

[...] the ground temperature range is expected to be between 185.2–271.0K. Likewise, the near surface air temperature is expected to be between 189.1–256.7K.
Edit: In the Monday media telecon, someone who was asked about temperatures at different heights informally answered that if you were standing next to Phoenix your head could be about 20 degrees cooler than your feet.

Thanks for that. That max ground temperature is only 2 degrees below freezing, well within the range to permit liquid water brines.
