The USGS has a camera monitoring the ongoing gasing of Halema'uma'u, Kilauea Crater on the Big Island of Hawaii
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/cam3 This crater looks very similar to Victoria Crater on Mars (See APOD archives for Octorber 2, 2006). They both have flat bottoms, steep sides, some promontories and a flat or level rim. If Halema,uma'u was not erupting and was located on Mars it would probably be identified as an impact crater. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between a some volcanic craters and impact craters from their appearance. |

You're right - they only looked similar in some ground and oblique photographs. So not so similar, as you say.
