Default Rolling, rolling, rolling

From NASA.gov
Quote:
This morning at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida space shuttle Endeavour completed its 4.2-mile trek from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B. Endeavour was secured to the pad at 7:17 a.m. EDT. With Atlantis on nearby Launch Pad 39A, this marks the final time that two shuttles will be on the launch pads at the same time, as the shuttle program draws to a close next year.

I hope that NASA captures an aerial image of both shuttles on the pad. It may have been done before but I can't recall ever seeing such a photo.

I'm pretty sure it's been done. I'll try to find it.

Edit: Oops I see you found it, too. Here's a bigger image at NASA:

NASA: Two at the Pad

Quote:
An aerial view of the Launch Complex at NASA's Kennedy Space Center shows space shuttles on both pads. At upper right is space shuttle Endeavour, while in the foreground is space shuttle Atlantis, preparing for its launch on the STS-125 mission to repair NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. This is the first time since July 2001 that two shuttles are on the launch pads at the same time at the center. Endeavour will stand by at pad 39B in the unlikely event that a rescue mission is necessary during space shuttle Atlantis' mission. After Endeavour is cleared from its duty as a rescue spacecraft, it will be moved to Launch Pad 39A for the STS-126 mission to the International Space Station.
That was the prior attempt from last Autumn.

The short answer is that they skimped on the initial design and development budget, which in turn made it a more expensive vehicle to operate.

The long answer is .... everything.

You can make out one of the renovations going on over at Pad B...the removed lightning mast with the new lightning towers replacing it.

Is that also the reason why Endeavour can't use Pad 39B to launch as STS-126 (however, apparently it can use the pad for a rescue mission?)

I think they want 39B for Ares testing. There was a plan, if Ares was ready, to use 39A both for STS-125 and the STS-400 rescue. But Ares wasn't quite ready to squat on 39B yet, so they used 39B for STS-400. But then they need to get the shuttle out of the way and use 39A for STS-127.

(From January: Spaceflight Now: One launch pad or two? No decision for Hubble mission)

Wikipedia: List of Constellation missions has:

Quote:
July 12 2009 Ares I-X Ares I-X ~2 min. Uncrewed 39B Atmospheric test of the first stage of the Ares I-X launcher with four active SRM segments and an inert fifth segment and upper stage.
Edit: The shuttle mission after the Hubble-repair STS-125 is STS-127, with a target launch mid-June. (STS-126 is history, end of year 2008.)

It was possible; but after Challenger it was obvious the shuttle represented a single-point-of=failure for too many space systems - commericial, defense and intel. The reduction in flights was as much as anything a result of the loss of payloads due to policy changes and the development of other systems.

7:00 PM, 4/22/09, Update: NASA considers moving shuttle launch date up one day

NASA managers are debating whether to move up launch of the shuttle Atlantis one day, from May 12 to May 11, to get as many launch opportunities as possible before standing down to make way for a military operation that requires support from the Air Force Eastern Range starting May 14, officials said Wednesday.
Complicated. Also describes scenarios for slips to make STS-127 (ISS mission) a July launch.

Too many launches. Not enough launch ranges.

It's a gorgeous image. I know it's older than me, but this is one of those times you sit back and realize that the shuttle is actually... really cool!

Set your clocks ahead one day.

CBS News Space Place:
Quote:
3:10 PM, 4/24/09, Update: Shuttle managers agree to retarget shuttle launch for May 11

Launch of the shuttle Atlantis on a mission to service and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope was moved up one day and retargeted for May 11 after engineers and managers concluded Friday that processing could be accelerated without impacting required work. Senior managers will hold an executive-level flight readiness review next Thursday to discuss final clearance for launch.
And earlier:

Quote:
9:45 AM, 4/24/09, Update: Engineers assess tool impact on shuttle payload bay door radiator (UPDATED at 11:20 a.m. with inspection results; no repairs needed)

A one-and-one-eighth-inch socket from a torque wrench fell from a service platform and hit the shuttle Atlantis' left payload bay door radiator during Hubble Space Telescope cargo installation earlier this week. In a lucky break for NASA, no one was injured, coolant lines in the radiator were not damaged and a dent where the socket impacted will not need repairs.

Hi all- New on here, so I don't know how to do that quote thing, but I'd like to make the observation that swift called the ae35 unit (or was worried about it, at least sub-consciously) back when the launch slipped in early october. Dude, you got the shine or somethin?

They are quite a few hotel options in Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach. I know that a lot of people are going down there for the launch, especially from GSFC and other institutions involved in HST. The sooner you book the better, but I'm sure there will be options of varying costs.

Yeah, I got the ref. Whats more the coincidence is that the AE was also a unit that when in failure mode, left a remote piece of equipment unable to recieve tracking commands. Hmmmmm. Oh, I found the quote option. Now I wonder if all that hypertext gobbledygook is going to show up in this post.

Is what like watching grass grow?
- The dialog in this thread as we await a May 11 launch?
- The buildup of anticipation to another (and some what riskier) shuttle flight?
