Default Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter LRO countdown and launch

It's time for a topic about the LRO countdown and launch.

This includes also LRO's little buddy LCROSS, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite.

NASA Launch Schedule:

Quote:
Date: May 20 [no earlier than]
Mission: LRO/LCROSS
Launch Vehicle: United Launch Alliance Atlas V
Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station - Launch Complex 41
Description: LRO will launch with the objectives to finding safe landing sites, locate potential resources, characterize the radiation environment and test new technology. The Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite mission is seeking a definitive answer about the presence or absence of water ice in a permanently shadowed crater at either the Moon's North or South Pole.
Previous discussion about the mission might be seen at topic: Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Post-launch discussion might happen there, too, or maybe in a future "results" topic. I'll try to keep this current for pointers to other topics.

Yeah, those who didn't, it's too late. By about 8 months.

Planetary Society Web Log: LPSC: Friday morning session on future missions

This I did not know:

Quote:
Five days after launch, [LCROSS] will have a lunar swingby, then vent fuel from the Centaur rocket - Then in Earth orbit for a 3 ½-month cruise, setting orbit up for a steep impact angle that couldn't be achieved from lunar orbit. Then separate from Centaur and impact. They expect a crater 20-30 meters in diameter, if regolith properties are similar to previously studied areas. LCROSS is ready to go! Ground-based and Earth orbiting observations planned. Centered on Hawaii for Mauna Kea observations, Will be visible from U.S. although low for those in the east. Not visible from Europe and Asia.
More there.

Oh good grief, why the delays? I would rather have it late then a failure, but it's excruciating.

This one was due to a preceding mission, WGS-2. It's a bit of a case of launch-or-get-off-the-pad.

Space.com: NASA Delays Next Moon Probe's Launch to June

Quote:
[...] due to a launch delay of the U.S. Air Force's Wideband Global Satcom-2 (WGS-2) communications satellite. [...] Both LRO and the military's WGS-2 satellite are slated to launch from the same pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida aboard Atlas 5 rockets. Denver-based United Launch Alliance, manufacturer and operator of the Atlas and Delta rockets, needs about 60 days between launches for ground processing.
WGS-2 finally left April 3, I think.

Too many launches. Not enough launch pads.

Quote:
I've been thinking a lot about the Moon lately. Most specifically, a new robotic lunar exploration mission called Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is set to launch in about a month. While a main goal of the mission is to search for potential landing sites and resources for future human explorers on the Moon, lately I've been thinking mostly about the way that this mission is likely to completely revolutionize lunar science.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite were scheduled to launch June 2, but NASA announced Friday they are delaying the launch about two weeks.

Planetary Society Blog: LRO & LCROSS Up-Close Tour

Quote:
Access to the spacecraft is strictly regulated. Everyone's camera equipment was wiped clean by contamination-control specialists. Our shoes were thoroughly brushed. We entered the garment room and were furnished with full clean room attire, known as "bunny suits," which includes full body suits, face masks, gloves and shoe covers all of which must be worn. As a research scientist myself, I wear this attire to protect myself from toxic chemicals. In this case of role reversal, the purpose is to protect the spacecraft from contamination by us humans.
[...]
"We will look to photograph [one or more of] the Apollo landing sites with 0.5 meter resolution", said Tooley. The high resolution camera will also be targeted to find other US and Russian unmanned robotic landers and rovers. "Initial images may be available during the first month. The lower half of the Lunar Module (LM) should be easily visible as well as the lunar rover tracks and perhaps the science instruments".

In spirit? Think you'd get a good view of the launch from Mars?

I'm curious for the first pics of LRO!

Exactly. The framework, the cables, the main boards, the optics, the antennae, show me show me show me!

(thanks for the correction. I felt the sentence could be misinterpreted, but didn't get as far as to realise it was plain wrong. )

The LCROSS shepherding spacecraft is a weird bird.

From what I understood of the presentation (NASA TV, now), it's based on a sort of separator for the main craft normally used in Centaur affairs, often the site of nanosatellites.

It's a doughnut. A ring. The LCROSS design has its business on six panels around this ring. For instance, one panel is a solar panel. There's just a hole in the middle (edit: filled by a fuel tank). You can kind of see the effect in the small LCROSS picture in the OP, a blue hexagonal bagel.

Hey. My briefing video was truncated, during the LCROSS storyboard. Twice. Rats.

Video is still live (but I missed a lot) on the high-res link. Weird.

Edit: I'm cursed. I'm getting 50% audio dropouts. I give up.

Alerting Moon fans - this story on Spaceflight Now reports that the LRO team will solicit targeting requests from the public, on top of the obvious space-exploration sites. They'd like to have the Apollo 11 site by the anniversary if constraints allow, and try their luck at Lunokhod tracks. (Did anyone notice that Richard Garriott bought Lunokhod 2 at auction??)

So everybody polish up your list of lunar mysteries...
