Default NASA Embarks On Epic Delay

NASA Embarks On Epic Delay

Quote:
Top officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration unveiled plans this week for a comprehensive, multibillion-dollar delay—the agency's most ambitious postponement of cosmic exploration ever.

The unprecedented delay has reportedly brought together the nation's foremost aerospace engineers, whose combined efforts have already added 18 months of rescheduled meetings to the daring mission.
Yeah, it's the Onion, and it's humor, and almost entirely untrue. Almost.

Quote:
"When we have finally finished here, the universe will see there is no end to what man can entangle in red tape," Scolese wrote in the stirring statement. "Even as we speak, our top people are dragging their feet on what will become the longest and most profound delay in the planet's history."

I misread it as "almost entirely true".

Excellent article. I fear NASA is putting all their eggs in one basket though. What if they fail? I think they should set out to start a second prong on this effort, an international cooperation. This monumental journey should benefit from lessons learned in space agencies in different cultures, to maximize potentiality exploitation in the quest to achieve the ultimate late goal. Petition your senator!

You know the Onion is satire because they print more space articles than any real paper would.

Dude, NASA's been doing that with manned exploration since they popped Glenn into orbit.

What was the alternative to Mercury?

Gemini?

Apollo?

The STS?

Nothing new in this at all.

It would hardly be in the spirit of the article to post about it quickly and efficiently..

They weren't tarrings, nor featherings, but the first two theonion.com links of yours I found when I looked, what if the universe is- like- one giant atom?, and the latest images from the Hubble.. seemed to draw some ire because they could be interpreted as intended to trick people into visiting the link for the surprise-humor effect.

I think some people don't like to be duped like that. I know I don't. I want at least enough sample material to be able to sense that it is humor. Even better is to have the fact that it is humor announced and the humor source called out by name. Then I'll visit, prepared, if I'm in the mood for that humor instead of hard news.

Last I heard, the Universe is going to last for what, another 100 trillion years?

I'd say a delay of a few years so as to re-aquire the capability we had with Saturn is well worth the wait.

Naturally folks used to chain-smoking Delta II launches every other week have a hard time kicking the habit, so it seems like forever to them.
