The full dynamic load test of the parachute system that will also be used on the Ares I-X launch was successful. ON october 8th, the parachute was dropped out of a plane with a 72.000 pounds dart hanging beneath it and landed safely.

And to be more exact, it was extracted-by-parachute from the C-17 Glad the parachute worked and that...

"the" C-17? What is this? Canada?

Anyway, apparently they used a C-17 for this test, and a C-130 for a lighter parachute test a few days earlier.

Sorry about that. I figuresd an on topic link is self explanitory. I'm forgetting, a lot of folks have these small devices that might have problems.

Links provide the 'authors' ~opinion(s) only - no more, no less. Usually, such is provided to support something said within a post, not all by itself (with exceptions being the rule, not vice versa!)

If you have nothing to say yourself, then don't say something (!). Please. Its self-explanAtory. Don't bother with making others load/think-about-loading a new tab/window (or many as it seems to be at times) just because you have the ability or desire to do so. Others know how to do such too, but demonstrate better judgment about it much more often than not. It is plain ol' common courtesy, I promise ya, and has zilch to do with any device, OS, or computer component. I mean, c'mon, you had a link about 'Hanley e-mail' in this 'Launch' thread, with nothing said about what it was - a waste of how many people's time(s)... And I just picked that link randomly from a few posts back to see if I could make it an example, LOL! 'tweren't blind luck

And yes, I really do not like the Ares I-* rocket. Not how it came into being, and the 'why' of its being is disliked more strongly, too. Its cheaper to just shoot (launch, if you like) it into the ocean than to de-stack & return to manufacturer(s), so 'shoot' it is. Strafe, simpler, and sooner-the-better (so to speak) ugh - that was bad, sorry.........

Please. I have large devices and enormous bandwidth.

Like so many others, I have a limited lifetime. And I may well have better things to spend my time on. I like to prioritize the tasks I spend it on. Be considerate. Try to give your readers an idea of what they will find if they follow your advice. Thanks.

Not that simple. When someone of Josh Hopkins ilk states economic fact it isn't opinion. His point was valid--folks tried to unfairly dismiss it as opinion

I noticed you didn't have that complaint about (ugordan I think it was) who posted the ULA sell on the thread about the Augustine comission. I guess that was all right.

People post links all the time to things that interest them. It seems folks only have a problem when I do it to back up points that are unpopular. This thread is about the Ares IX flight and I posted info directly related to the topic at hand.

And I am not the only one who posts links
Strongest Forensic Evidence Proving Apollo Mission

No one complained about that.

You mean like this?

Augustine: Moon Return a No-Go. . . .

No complaint about that either. But everyone knew the forum title, and I appreciated Alex' info (as opposed to being petty.)

That's fine, then say so. But don't complain when someone posts links about that rocket when folks here have no problem linking to ULA propaganda unasked as well. In a real debate, people post evidence to back their points up. And no one said you had to click on any link. If you don't like the rocket, then don't visit this thread.

There might just be folks out there who are excited about this rocket as shown by this poll here: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/ind...?topic=15341.0

And they just might want to lean more about this vehicle. I like it when people post links that I have never seen before.

I start the thread with "about time this mission had its own thread."

A bit further, I say:

Quote:
Whether Ares continues or not is an interesting discussion, but let's keep that in more relevant threads. This thread is only about this I-X launch.
This thread is about the launch of I-X. Nothing more, nothing less. Any side issues such as DIRECT, Ares cancellation, economics, EELLVVAAEENMMORPGLV's, the man rating of Minuteman, giving the ISS to the Faroer Islands etc, can be kept nicely in their own threads.

If we're going to keep discussing all side issues of the VSE in every thread even remotely related to it, we'd end up having totally missed what actually happened during the first development of a new manned US launcher in 30 years. I'd hate that. So please, please leave this thread to things directly related to the Ares I-X craft and launch, not the project as a whole or even broader.

She's on the pad! Any pictures of that? I only find a picture of her being on her way, not when she's arrived. It's not dark yet overthere, is it?

This NASA mission page has a picture of it on the pad, at least at the moment.

The Ares I-X now is secured on Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The test rocket, sitting on a mobile launcher platform, was “hard down” on the pad’s pedestals at 9:17 a.m. EDT. The rotating service structure is expected to be rolled into place at about 12:30 p.m.

Thanks. I meant a big picture, as I can't find a way to get a bigger one of that seemingly nice but quite small pic.

I watched the same video this morning on our local NASA channel. Most impressive in HD.

Ares I is the crew launch vehicle being developed by NASA as a component of the Constellation Program. The name "Ares" refers to the Greek deity Ares, who is identified with the Roman god Mars. Ares I was originally known as the "Crew Launch Vehicle" (CLV).
NASA plans to use Ares I to launch Orion, the spacecraft being designed for NASA human spaceflight missions after the Space Shuttle is retired in 2010. Ares I is intended to complement the larger, unmanned Ares V, which is the cargo launch vehicle for Constellation. NASA selected the Ares designs for their anticipated overall safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness.

Of course not, but that picture (nor the others) were not available at the time of my request. I was quite surprised that the picture-speedy NASA website took 2 days to give anything more than a thumbnail of Ares 1 on the pad in their main article on it.

They more than made up for that now.

This link provides all Ares 1 pics I and you will ever need.

No problem, just make sure you are "go" together with the rest of BAUT for the launch.

It's actually really pretty. (I still stand by my signature of having no preference for systems, I find most rockets beautiful.)

I'm a big Ares fan (as you might have guessed) but I once commented that I thought it looked a bit like the old German hand grenade (the Potato masher). I think Scott Lowther had a nice painting that would be perfect nose-art for this bird:

During a news conference following the review meeting, Bob Ess, Ares I-X mission manager, described today as the culmination of their review cycle and said, "We're good to fly next week."
Launch target:

2009, October 27, 0800 EDT, Tuesday
2009, October 27, 1200 UTC, Tuesday

About 3-1/2 days to launch.
