Red face Overview of NASA's Rocket History/NASA TV

Nice link on NASA's progress in the rocket Business.

http://www.nasa.gov/mp4/397003main_k...609_aresIx.mp4

Be sure to watch NASA TV for the Ares 1-X details.

DUDE... That's a 32 Meg link. Not nice.

Now; maybe the video is nice, but for a lot of people the link is not.

For something this big, I suggest a more robust description of what is in there.

I remember my days of dial-up, and I would *not* have appreciated a 32meg link without knowing it was an overnight download.

Was there anything in particular about that video you wish to mention/discuss? There are plenty of other videos at nasa.gov as well (sounds ~like spam for NASA, LOL)

Well, having a DSL bandwidth faster than T1, I didn't have any problems watching the video.

Very cool video, bebe7! Thanks for posting.

It seems like its a Ares I-X 'commercial', LOL. How ironic the OP stated NASA 'progress' (roflmbo) More like a NASA 'mulligan' (or do-over, I guess) The last line of video states "gives a fresh look at pathways beyond LEO..." - how quaint of a statement...

NASA TV is not the best source for Ares details - it tends to skip over relevant truths that the public would not want to know about. Just calling it like it is, not being mean to NASA at all. I like NASA TV, but go elsewhere for the whole 'story' of things; learned that long ago I do like how NASA TV tells of the many other aspects that NASA does (atmosphere, aeronautics, etc - not *just* human space flight!)

The post you replied to was posted with good intentions too. You need to remember that there are a lot of people reading this forum who can't watch the video that you linked to. For different reasons: they might be on dial-up, they might be close to a bandwidth cap, they might be at work, they might be at a character screen, etc. etc.

It is common netiquette (big word for "being nice on the internet") to tell people that a link you post leads to a large file or document, and to describe a bit what is in it. It's not much work to add (PDF, 8MB) or (big movie link) or something like that after your link, but it would help others.

Yes, I thought the link itself would provide indication there of.

for those who know what ".mp4" means and how large these files get it does, but you can't assume everyone knows that.

FWIW, mp4 files can encapsulate HDTV materials gigabytes in size, not just small podcasts.

As Nicolas said, you can't assume that everyone here knows what you know about the internet and computers. Many different people post and read here, kids, teens, and those who were once teens Some with a very technical background, and some who are happy that they know how to turn on a computer* and to get online.. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for understanding!

*) When the ATX power supplies arrived, where you turn the computer off by holding the power button for 5 seconds, someone I knew sighed: "Turning the darned thing on and off was all I understood, and now even that doesn't work anymore!"

Not to bring this up again if the discussion is over, but what's the big problem? If the file is too big for you... just close the window/tab.

I mean, it doesn't crash your computer or anything does it?

You've never used a 14k4 or 28k8 (or slower) modem, have you?

Thanks Murphy, seemingly though somepeople would rather take a positive intent and twist it into something else.

Go Constellation...go team.

Nobody doubts your positive intentions! All we're saying is that it would have been even better if you added a little info about the link.

-on really slow connections, it does freeze your computer more often than not
-at work, you might get a nice "this action is prohibited. This event has been logged" message when opening a video
-when you're on a download limit (certainly combined with a fast connection, like overhere), every unwarned MB downloaded is one too many.

As said, I certainly don't doubt the positive intentions of bebe7 and encourage his/her interest in space and sharing space related things. But at the same time there is a reason for these netiquette rules, easily forgotten by those who don't suffer from the issues the rules were made for.

OK, I think this discussion has run its course. I'm closing this thread.

bebe7 - For future reference, it is nice to give a little explanation as to the content of a link, its form (text, PDF, video, whatever), and its size (particularly if it larger than a couple of MBs). And if there is already a thread on the topic, it is probably better to add it to that thread, rather than start a new one.
