Mars Rovers Make Appearance at Chicago Auto Show

Monday 9 February 2004

Chicago — NASA officials made a surprise appearance at the Chicago Auto Show today. NASA is showing off new concept vehicles in order to generate more interest in space exploration. Two new concept versions of their Mars Rovers are on display this week. The six and eight wheeled drive SUV's are located between the Maserati and Chevrolet displays.

The NASA Showman shouted out, "This baby is the ultimate in living vicariously," as scantily-clad women hugged the vehicle. "Forget your gas-guzzling Ford Explorer, this Explorer runs on solar energy!"

The Auto Show Program states that the Mars Rovers are classified as SUV for "Science Utility Vehicle." They "get the best mileage in their class, albeit, they are the only vehicles in their class." Features and ammenities include a Cabin Surround Airbag System, Visual Collision Avoidance System, and Video Entertainment System. However, Luxury appointments like leather seating are lacking.

The NASA Showman admitted that there had been some issues with the first rover, but that NASA had entered into a licensing agreement with GM for Roadside Assistance and GM's Onstar system.

The cost of the Rovers is prohibitive for most people, but NASA countered with a new mass production model. "If we make and launch one a day, we could get the cost down to only a few million. We're also working on a Time-share system to get the costs down to only a few dollars a minute."

The Mars Rovers are on display at McCormick Place until Thursday.

What, you lost the uplink? Let's see if that roadside assistance really works!

Well, I was gonna say that the ladies were wearing white lab coats, with nothing visible underneath, but decided against it.

If the rover breaks down, just reach up and push the blue Onstar button for help. Whadyamean no one's there to push the button?
