They'd serve viewers better to make things most reconizable and then indicate north (if that's the reason for the poor orientation and it is imprtant; could it just be camera-up?) with text or an arrow icon.

The pictures look good, almost TOO good! Is it just me or do they look more processed than the MOC or MGS stuff - not as crisp - maybe it's just the color that I am not used to. It almost seems like they have the "Martha Stewart cheesecloth on the lense" effect on some shots. Or is that fog? Or resolution fuzziness?
I like the perspective projections they do, but they seem to put it in the fine print that they are renders using the stereo information. Or are they really taking those pics at such a low angle?
I guess we are spoiled by having access to the raw images from JPL.

The first one ("Modern Astrophysics") is pretty basic, apparently just making sure everyone understands the fundamentals and knows how to work equations like figuring out the redshift of a star (or the recession velocity from the redshift), the temperature based on the peak radiation, etc.

8) . Are you submitting your response by one of your 8,000 web links. No doubt, several calculate all that for you.

Please keep me (us) informed on how you like it. I still would like to enroll at some point.

BTW....Your post rate is now at 5/hr indicating an ETA (Estimated Time of 10k Achievement) 20 hours from now. =D> Assuming you don't stay up all nite, then I would estimate tomorrow afternoon as the big moment. I'll miss it as I will be at A & M.

That's not typical, and especially not for weekends. Monday is a better bet.

Very impressive, what particularly caught my eye were the columnular type rock formations at the base of the cliff (top 1/3 roughly centre field) and also those overhangs just beg to be absailed!

The whole area looks as if it could be used to re-write geology text books.

The following is a first edition of the DARN ratings for the dang nice pictures from MARS. Special thanks to the picture linking provider - Mr. P10K (ToSeek). Compliments also to JPL, NASA, ESA, a Sonoma State guy, as well as, the many others which have led to the creation of this edition.

The DARN system is a weighted scale system which computes a final result given three variables: Drama, Appearance and Realism to produce, by a mathematical process, the final DARN number - N. Some values are subjective and must be adjusted according to your fancy.

[Note: see posts above for actual links]

Valles Marineris [DARN: 9.5/8.5/8.5/26.5] Take a nice long look

Olympus Mons caldera [DARN: 9.0/9.0/9.0/27.0] A must for Yellowstone campers

Kasei Vallis [DARN: 7.5/8.0/7.5/23]

Hecates Tholus [DARN:9.0/9.0/8/0/26] Another Yellowstoner must see

Louros Valles [DARN: 8.5/8.0/8.0/24.5] Martian burn pit or ware pit

Arsia Mons in 3-D [DARN: 7.0/6.5/7.5/21] *

Flood Plains on Mars [DARN: 9.5/9.5/9/28] Dramatic with good color

Valles Marineris [DARN: 8.5/8.5/7.0/24] interesting color, weak perspective

Northern rim of Hellas basin [DARN: 7/8/7/22] fairly nice but petite

Fractured crater near Valles Marineris [DARN: 8.5/9.0/7.5/25] great shot (sky missing)

Melas Chasma [DARN: 9.0/9.0/7.5/25.5] Wonderful view but sky missing

Slides on Olympus Mons [DARN: 9.5/9.5/8.0/27] amazing, skate-board ready, (sky missing)

Perspective View of Olympus Mons [DARN:9.0/7.5/7.5/24] non-mountain looking

The eroded valleys of Dao and Niger Valles [DARN: 9.5/9.0/9.0/27.5] stunning
Martian Basin Dune set [DARN: 9.5/8.5/8.5/26.5]
Mars Express 3-D Screensaver [DARN: 9/5/8/23] *

Eos Chasma [DARN: 9/8/8/25] Color seems off a bit

Martian Mesas [DARN: 8/8.5/6.5/23] False frost look

Crater in Solis Planum [DARN: 7.5/9/8.5/25] A little too moon-like

Ophir Chasma 1 [DARN: 9.0/8.0/7/24] fuzzy detail due to stereo imaging *

The Grabens Of Claritas Fossae [DARN: 9.5/9.0/8.5/27]....small and observation angle not ideal

Ophir Chasma 2 [DARN: 9.5/9.5/7.5/26.5]....sky removed

[* - The final "N" result may be understated. The modDARN, which incorporates the use of user enhancements (i.e stereo glasses), is still in development and not ready for beta testing. In fact, this first edition publication is a beta test in itself, now that I mention it]

[I just assumed you wanted my opinion, ToSeek. I got tired of saying..."stunning", "amazing", etc. and I ain't got many adjectives in my bucket, anyhow ]

Just glad to hear that someone appreciates the thread. I just wish they'd post images more often than once every week or two.

I am still curious about the Martian sky.

Did we resolve, reasonably well, what it looks like in terms of texture and color?

Did we get a firm handle on the blue haze around the sun as seen from a rover? I suggested the particles were too large for blue but small enough for the red end of the spectrum for scattering, thus a blue haze. I don't recall an affirmation to this but maybe your memory is better.

One comment regarding your descriptions of the pictures as "sky removed".

Quote:
This close-up perspective view was calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the stereo channels.
That sentence is applied to the orthogonal views on the ESA press release page for the Ophir Chasma pictures, and probably all the other orthogonals. In other words, the camera view was really down, but the terrain model (generated from the stereo image channels) was then used to project a different view. Therefore, the sky was never in the image to be removed. Adding a sky would be false data. Thus the black surroundings on the images - that's regions that weren't in the imaging.

So, does it affect the aesthetics of the image? Perhaps. But they aren't going to go coloring in a pink sky to make the picture look better. Think of the rumors that type of doctoring would generate.

Thanks. That makes good sense. Adding a sky would not be reasonable as the horizon is not established. Also not established, at least in my mind, is the likely color of the sky for a given time of day.

We might want to incorporate a special factor for this circumstance into the even more complex formulae under development (i.e. modDARN).

Edge of Huygens Crater

Quote:
The European Space Agency's Mars Express took this image of the rim of impact crater Huygens, which is 450 km (280 miles) across. By counting craters in the area, researchers have determined that Huygens was blasted out approximately 4 billion years ago, early on in Mars' history when the planet was being heavily bombarded like the rest of the planets in the Solar System. The rim seems to show a tributary system that could have been water runoff in the ancient Martian past.
