I'm not sure what you were expecting, but here's the first image captured by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander from space. What, you were expecting blackness and maybe a star or two? ...

Interesting - they put a light inside the spacecraft... I wonder why? Not just for this picture I'm sure!

The robot arm camera is designed to investigate the contents of the scoop and the trenches it digs - and is equipped with Red, Green and Blue LED's to illuminate the scene. This was with the red led's
