That's interesting. It didn't occur to me that the astronomical details could have been anything other than local color to the tail. I'd always regarded most of the fantastic things in the Odyssey as allegory... but the dates and stars match. Maybe there are syrens out there.

Forming opinions as we speak

More and more, folks are finding out that Homer knew what he was talking about. The Iliad leading us to Troy was only one minor part. They've found where the Greeks gathered before they set sail, and they've decided that modern Ithaca is the Homeric one, so they'll probably turn up Odysseus's digs fairly soon.

I enjoyed reading the Odyssey. It's the worksheets I suffered through.
