Universetoday is a fantastic site for everyone who are interested in Astronomy as well as for newcomers ,specially for me.I like the topic of "What's Up This Week?" of Tammy Plotner & I am interested in Comet Hunting.

I follow the forum, as an amateur astronomer, but am scared as to where to post my posts
Welcome to the forum, Stewart. Don't worry about where you start a thread because us mods can always move it to the most appropriate section. Replying to threads that have already been started shouldn't be a problem because your post is automatically put in that thread. If you want to start a thread and you're not sure of where to put it, feel free to PM one of us.

And to everyone else who joined recently, welcome to UT!

Hello fellow cybernauts et al.,
Call me Hyginus,if only because I'm old fashioned enough to take the Rules siriusly(sic) No smarm,no plugs, heh? Life goes on. Having read many a thread of this forum, I appreciate the light cast on difficult questions despite seeing infrared outbursts. Assuming,Gentle Reader, you are not interested in my warm, fuzzy side(Hitler was an antivivisectionist)I crave indulgence to lay my cards on the table. After a vigorous randomizing...I turn up the Arp card. Well, now let's put his trump card(NGC 7319)face down and see how the chips stack up when we goto http://www.msfc.nasa.gov/news/news/release...2004/04-283html where a billion(?)y.o. massive black hole raises a theoretical brow and where an isolated(?)elliptical is an oinker of dark matter. As a reader of Arp's books, I note that the elliptical is flanked by two big, bright spirals along with a few galactic companions in a line:all of which is the Arpian scenario? Since I'm merely an armchair scientist, I acknowledge a debt to those better schooled than your obt. srvt, Alfred Wasick

Hi, there, Hyginus & welcome to the UT forums!

I read your post with interest (& amusement :P ) but when I followed your link it only led to an error report! Could you give us a link that actually works so that we can comment on your thoughts? Cheers, mate!

Dear fellow carbon based hominids,
Forgive a Gandaulf wannabe for the error committed by I, Hyginus here on Nov. 27 The ponderous apology goes back to Nov 22 '04 at UT where a news item "Supermassive Black Holes Early On" drew my attention. Interest deepened after I clicked on to (full story) The gravity of the implications induced me to goto the link provided http://chandra.nasa.gov/ Then, there at the Chandra Observatory site I found two news itemsne concerning the UT article above, t'other described an elliptical galaxy engorged with dark matter. Here there were links to nasa for each release. The address I gave for the nasa site was over 90% accurate except for three pesky ellipsis points should have been a / (...=/) To be honest, dark matter reminds me of quarks in that both were born out of contradiction of theory and observation Back to Bach. For instance, how does a magnet(with no net charge) induce current? Is part of the answer that thar's an ether of electrical nature that the magnetic field interfaces? Ooops, hot water is arisin' mates.,
Yr obt srvt,Hyginus

Hi all - my name is Anne and I have been interested in astronomy for approximately one-and-a-half-years. I live in Perth, Western Australia - we have just emerged from winter thus haven't been out viewing much lately. The weather is starting to warm up now so I'm really looking forward to my night time viewing sessions again and viewing visible passes of the ISS and HST now the night sky is not so cloudy.
I am an amateur astronomer and I love it. There is SO much to read, see and learn about in astronomy that (like the universe) it seems infinite. My passion has passed on to my mum who is now also interested and enjoys hearing news that I relay to her and viewing the night sky.

I currently have a really crummy telescope (that I purchased a year and a half ago from a toy shop as I didn't know any better) but am looking foward to treating myself and I'm going to buy a new Dobsonian telescope.

I love this site - it is great to read an overview of events making it much easier to understand and enjoy - well done Fraser.

This is my first posting (of I hope, many). Enjoy your day.

Anne

Hi, Erimus here. I'm trying to expand my horizons a bit from the Astronomy magazine and Space.com boards.

I'm a (very) amateur astronomer with an old, rickety but lovable 60 mm refractor, and a slick pair of 7x50 binoculars, the latter of which is my preferred instrument. I've been an amateur since I was quite young, but still consider myself a novice. My main interests are sunlike stars, double stars and open/globular clusters, which is about par for the course for a light-polluted city dude like myself. My interest in astronomy naturally waxes and wanes over the course of a year, so don't be surprised if I post like crazy for a few months, then drop out of sight for several more months before coming back.

My homepage: really, more of an enhanced profile--> http://members.aol.com/dosidicus/

In any event, hello everybody!

Hello there.

I've been a subscriber to the UT newsletter for over a year now and only lately noticed there was a forum available. I lurked for a while, and now I've finally decided to join in.

I've been interested in astronomy off and on for about 20 years now. I own an 8" Meade which I use mostly in the backyard. However here in Saskatoon, SK, I'm never too far away from dark skies.

I'd like to get into astrophotography and will probably be peppering the experts in that area with questions. I do have some decent efforts that I'll post.

I'm also an avid golfer, and I love to spend time at my cabin in northern Sask.

Hey a fellow Canuck who's an astronomer/golfer as well. Very good.

Of course here in Saskatoon, it's too cold to do either right now.
