I believe Frasers policy on chat rooms is that we'll have one only if we have a special guest.

We've had this discussion before, this is a space forum as such a realtime chat would mean anyone not online at a certain time would miss out on a discussion. A forum allows us to all go on at whatever time we please and post replies. Also a chat room would be impossible to moderate. We can moderate a board, but a realtime chat?

Free chats like Boldchat need an operator to work.

Some of the others are Java based, so require Java.

I have started a Universe Today Blog that a few of us are playing around with, we may be able to start a free chat from there?

Otherwise, the chat realy happens on MSN, AOL and Google as far as I am aware?

to combat missed discussions they could be put into a "file" and accesed later by the guys who missed out

i don't know, but i do a little Java at school and maybe i could help make something like this happen if everyone decides to do this.

Ok list of Chat requests

http://www.universetoday.com/forum/index.p...?showtopic=5568

http://www.universetoday.com/forum/index.p...?showtopic=4373

And I am sure it has come up in other conversations.

Again, if you are on Hotmail, IM Free download here, and yahoo IM Free download. There is also AOL and ICQ.

Also worth looking at is Trillian.

But maybe PalTalk might be the way to go?

I think, maybe, we could get times when most user were online. And then, turn chats on at those times. Make transscipts available. Maybe.

That's a good idea, rahuldandekar.

We have to remeber though that someone must moderate each and every chat in progress. The moderators do enough as it is around the site and, maybe asking them to do that is too much as matthew has indicated.

Personally, I don't think it's necessary, as bossman has clarified, we should stick to fraser's polisi.....

I'm starting to support this idea more and more. Over a year ago Zephyr46 and I discussed this subject at length via PM.
While I'm inclined to agree with Fraser that managing it is the major issue, it may not be totally out of the question in the future if a joint means of managing it by the moderators and community support people can be achieved.

The final decission is of coarse Fraser's alone. This is after all, his site. While he does give a lot of credence to those of us on his staff so to speak, in the end he is still the Master of the Universe Today site. :P
