I couldnt help but notice that certain topics keep coming up over and over again (like artificial gravity, future space propulsion techniques, etc., etc., I was wondering what we could do about these. I was thanking that the mods could just float them, but then the forums would be overrun with floated topics. So what could we do about these?

Float them? What's that?

I don't think floats would overrun the forum boards. Maybe if we set aside an extra section for floats, and direct people (especially newcomers and professionals) there. Then again, it might be too much to ask for (I wonder how much trouble Fraser went to to make the Astrophotography section?), but on the other hand it might just be worth it.

But then, how do we stop unsuspecting newcomers from posting new strings instead of replying in the floats?

Fraser?

If there are two topics that are pretty similar, we can always just merge them.

Is that what you ment by floating?

When a topic is "floated," I think it means permanent. The Rules and Introduce Yourselves are floated strings.

To float a topic is to pin the topic.

In my opinion it very good that the same topics come up over and over.

1) They remind us of past concepts believe me people do forget little point's

2) These concepts are always subject to change with new advances in technology and theories

3) There are lots of other people who don't know what we know and are merely asking, i for one hardy understood some of the concepts posted here and still don't understand some of them.

A new string may become essential when the old one has more than 6-7 pages, 'cause newcomers don't have time to read so many pages.

Yes this is all so very true, we should consider this before deciding to float too many topics.

True, true, but if it comes up so much that people cant add anything to it, then it becomes a problem.

Foating does mean to pin it permanently. Sorry about the confusion.

Maybe we could do the following:

Just as there's a Space and Astronomy and Universe Today section, there could be a pinned section. In the pinned section are the topics (missions to Mars, black holes, etc.) and each topic has its own subset of strings.

I hope that doesn't sound to complicated.

Regards,

hi rahuldandekar & Starlab

rahuldandekar makes a good point even when i miss a few posts from a discussion
i find it hard to get to what every ones talking about never mind if you want to reply to an earlier point. You have to "interrupt" a new point that everyones moved on to.
