So what's better: 1) Universe Today gets slashdotted and many new eyeballs come to visit, so many that site fails under the load, or 2) the slashdotter actually thinks ahead and suggests an alternate site (like NASA in this case) better able to handle the load and you get no new visitors?

Number 1, no question. I'd much rather have the site crumple during the heaviest loads than no exposure at all.

Can't you redo the website or get a better server to with stand the new visitors or is that out of your budget?

It's not the regular traffic. It happens on days when a story gets picked up by Slashdot, Digg, etc. For a few hours the traffic on the website goes up by a factor of 100X or more. So, in order to be able to handle that, I'd have to pay for 100X the computing power, all the time, just for the situations when I get a traffic spike.

I'd rather just suffer through the occasional traffic spike than pay the enormous amount of money to keep the site on high alert all the time.
